General Caving Trip Information
The staff and volunteers of the 2006 NSS
Convention are pleased to offer a variety of
caving opportunities before, during, and after
convention. The general information provided
below is intended to make the trips safer and
more enjoyable for all.
-
Trip sign-up sheets will be posted near
Registration, but please express interest in
particular trips early; before convention
starts if possible. This will allow the
trip leaders and convention staff to better
plan for demand, and increases your odds of
visiting a particular cave.
-
Pre-convention and post-convention trip
questions and sign-up should be directed to
the contact points provided. The convention
staff and volunteer will do their best to
help, but we are not directly involved with
organizing the trips before and after
convention.
-
The trip leader for each trip has final say
over who may or may not go on a given trip.
If you have any doubts about your
preparedness for a trip, please contact the
trip leader early rather than risk a last
minute disappointment.
-
Assume basic caving gear (helmet, three
sources of light, sturdy boots, warm gloves,
etc...) is required for any trip. Your trip
leader or the convention staff can give you
more specific information on a particular
cave.
-
All of our caves are on the cool side (~36˚F
to ~45˚F). A thermal under-layer that is not
cotton should be worn for all but the
smallest caves.
-
Our alpine caves are cold and at best damp.
Hypothermia is a real concern. You can go
from a beautiful 80˚F day into a 36˚F degree
cave. Water-resistant/water-proof coveralls
are preferred. In some caves, cotton caving
clothes are completely inappropriate and
synthetics, or perhaps wool, are the only
safe option. In others, cotton might be
feasible, but should be avoided if possible.
Remember, if you are immobilized in one of
these cold caves, you will chill quickly. If
in doubt, ask your trip leader or convention
staff for more information.
-
In the event you do not want to transport
some piece of caving equipment or forget it
at home, be aware that there will be caving
gear vendors at convention. Be sure to stop
by. There is also an REI store in Bellingham
that might have what you need though REI
tends toward general backpacking, camping,
and rock climbing gear and clothing. They
usually don’t have any caving specific gear.
